Exeter is an historic cathedral and university city and the capital of Devon.

Exeter has enjoyed considerable success in recent years. A report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) found that between 2000 and 2010 only one other city in the UK – oil rich Aberdeen – had increased its productivity per head of population as much as Exeter.

Exeter University and Exeter College have both grown and improved significantly in the last 10 to 15 years. Our schools have also enjoyed big improvements in their performance.

Exeter has managed to sustain and attract a good number of cutting edge businesses and companies attracted by what the city has to offer, our top class educational institutions and attractive environment.

The city’s Labour council has grown the city, redeveloped the centre, while levying the fifth lowest council tax in England. Recent investments like John Lewis have cemented Exeter’s regional status as a shopping destination.

In spite of the recent economic climate, the city has managed to preserve an attractive and diverse cultural offer. In 2012 our municipal Royal Albert Memorial Museum won the prestigious national Art Fund prize of best museum in Britain. Our beautiful Cathedral has exciting plans to develop a new visitors’ centre and expose Exeter’s historic Roman baths.

Exeter has helped spearhead the revival in local and regional food and drink and is home to the annual South West Food Festival. Exeter is also a great place to stay while exploring the nearby Jurassic Coast or the two National Parks in Devon – Exmoor and Dartmoor.

In spite of the enormous current pressure on the NHS, our local hospital, the Royal Devon and Exeter, has retained its reputation as one of the best and best run in the country.
