Exeter is a major economic engine for the whole region, with many people commuting into the city for work. With the new science park and expanding airport to the east of the Exeter, this status as a major economic player in the region looks set to continue, with a mixed base of scientific, research and customer service employment.

Exeter’s workforce is employed in a wide range of sectors, with the many people working in public administration, education and health. Major employers include British Telecom, EDF Energy, the MET Office and The University of Exeter.

The proportion of Exeter’s economically active workforce currently claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance is 1.1%, compared to the national average of 2%. Unemployment in Exeter decreased by 19.3% between 2006 and 2007.
